Fishing Boat Nearly Capsizes After Humpback Whale Breaches Close By – Video
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again – the deep dark waters of the ocean are filled with wonders. We know so little of what is really hiding in its depths, it sometimes even scares us.
What’s not to be afraid of, right? We see all sorts of movies about gargantuan sea creatures lurking in the black abyss, waiting for the right time to float up to the surface, we hear campfire stories of sailors lost at sea because of unknown forces. Even if we don’t believe in the supernatural, the fact is that the water hides some of the greatest predators that ever lived.
From sharks the size of a five story building, to the tiniest poisonous jellyfish, it really takes courage to feel completely safe inside the water. However, looking at this video it seems that it takes a lot of courage to feel safe floating on top of the water, too.
Two brothers took their new boat out fishing for the first time near Keppel Island, Queensland, Australia on Tuesday, but what they accidentally caught on video is the true trophy! James Cullen got the shock of his life when a huge humpback whale unexpectedly breached just meters in front of their boat while he was trying to film another whale in the far distance.
The gobsmacked 27-year-old and his younger brother Ben believe the 49 foot humpback calf was ‘showing off’ when it deliberately launched itself from the water, leaving their five-meter vessel rocking wildly. “That exact moment this huge whale jumped out of the water, it must only have been about a 3 feet from the boat. We think it was the calf of the one we could see in the distance. It was just complete luck that I was filming at that exact moment – it was unreal timing.”
The two fishermen were drenched and recall that watching the calf splash was like it went in slow motion. And they now have bragging rights over younger brother Clayton, 25, who usually accompanies them but missed the spectacular show.
Their amazing footage has racked up thousands of views on social media – but the brothers were more pleased they also caught two 20kg Spanish Mackerel the same day.
The scare of capsizing aside, humpback whales breachingtruly is a marvelous sight to behold in slow motion. It just shows the true unbridled power of nature and all of its inhabitants. The whale might have been just a tiny calf, but compared to us humans, it just shows us how much different we are as a species. No one is better or worse, but everyone is as unique as the other and precisely that uniqueness is what makes us coexist in this world.
